Transportation in Amalfi Coast

Your complete guide to getting around Amalfi Coast - from airport transfers to local transport

Getting Around Amalfi Coast

The Amalfi Coast runs on three real modes: SITA buses hug the cliff roads all day, ferries hop between the main towns when the sea is calm, and private drivers wait at every piazza for when you've had enough of the curves. Buses are the cheap backbone, buy the day-pass at any tabacchi shop and you can ride Positano-Amalfi-Ravello as often as you like. Ferries are a moderate splurge but give you the postcard view while skipping the hairpin traffic. They dock right in Amalfi and Positano harbors, so no uphill hike with luggage. Taxis and NCC cars are the comfort option, pricey, but after one sunset bus jam you'll understand their appeal. First-timers should know the buses fill fast by mid-morning and won't stop if they're packed, so aim for the earliest departure or use the ferry instead. The coast road is single-lane chaos. Driving yourself sounds romantic until you're reversing uphill for a delivery van. If you're coming from Naples airport, the honest sequence is: Curreri shuttle to Sorrento (cheap), then SITA bus or ferry onward, skip the rogue taxi touts inside arrivals and head to the official rank if you need a car all the way.

Intercity Trains & Buses

The Amalfi Coast has no direct rail service, travelers connect through Salerno or Sorrento, both served by Trenitalia regional trains from Naples. From Salerno, SITA Sud buses wind along the SS163 coastal road through Amalfi, Positano, and onward to Sorrento. The ride is famously scenic but slow. The narrow cliff-hugging road means frequent stops, and summer congestion can easily double travel times. For destinations beyond Campania, Salerno is the stronger rail hub, with high-speed connections to Rome that take roughly half the time of driving. Sorrento sits at the end of the Circumvesuviana commuter line, better suited for day trips to Pompeii or central Naples than for longer journeys. Comparing schedules and fares on a platform like Omio before committing helps, since frequency varies sharply by season.

Quick Transportation Tips

Grab your SITA bus tickets at any tabacchi shop before you climb aboard. Drivers never sell them on the Amalfi-Sorrento line. Do this first. Saves hassle later.

Grab the right side seat on the SITA bus. Cliffs drop away beneath you. Views soar when you roll from Sorrento toward Positano. Sit here.

Download the Travelmar ferry app. Pre-book Amalfi-Positano-Capri seats for summer. Walk straight past the dock queues. Simple.

Driving? Reserve a parking space in advance at Parcheggio Luna Rossa in Amalfi. Daytime spots are gone by 9 a.m. Book early.
